Overview

The EDIT CHART RIBBON contains tools that allow you to modify your chart. The EDIT CHART RIBBON allows you to modify both the content and presentation of your chart.

EDIT CHART RIBBON is found in the Top Tool Bar.

Charting Tools Group

The following tools are available:
select.png Select Tool Enter Select Mode. This mode allows you to select and edit boxes, box cells and connecting lines. Click and drag (starting on the background) to select multiple boxes.
pan.png Pan Tool Enter Pan Mode. Click and drag to change which part of the chart is displayed.
addbox.png Add Subordinate Box Enter Add Subordinate Mode. Click on a box to add a subordinate.
movebox.png Move Box Tool Enter Move Box Mode. Click on a box and then drag it over another box. When you release the mouse, the box (and any subordinates) will be moved. Green arrows indicate whether the box will be placed as a peer or a subordinate.
addassistant.png Add Assistant Box Enter Add Assistant Mode. Click on any box to add an assistant.
addchart.png Add New Chart Tool Enter New Chart mode. Click anywhere on the background to create another chart on the page.
moveobject.png Move Object Tool Enter Move Object Mode. Click and drag on a chart, image or text box to reposition. Move Object Mode is different than Move Box Mode.
unlink.png Unlink Tool Enter Unlink Mode. Click and drag a box to unlink it from a chart. You can use this tool to create multiple charts on a page.

Tips and Tricks

  • You can resize a box by dragging the small square in the lower right-hand corner. You can also resize boxes using the box layout editor.
  • Hold down the shift key (when you click) to add to the selection. Double-click on a box cell to edit.
  • You can move a box between two different charts (See Unlink and Add New Chart tools above).
  • You can zoom in/out using the mousewheel or the zoom control (in the lower right hand corner).
  • Right click on the chart background to change tool modes.

Box Properties Group

Changes apply to any selected boxes only.

boxshadow.png Box Shadow Turn box shadow on or off.
boxborder.png Box Border Set box border style and thickness.
bordercolor.png Border Color Set box border color.
sort.png Sort Set Sort Order for boxes in the chart.
boxlayouteditor.png Box Layout Editor Modify the format of a box including which fields are displayed.

Tips and Tricks

  • One way to get a lot of boxes on a page is to set the border style to 'No Border'.
  • The last row of the color picker allows you to set custom colors.

Text Properties Group

Changes apply to any selected boxes and/or selected box cells only.

fontselector.png Font Selector Select the font.
fontsize.png Font Size Set the font size.
fontcolor.png Font Color Set the font color.
cellfillcolor.png Cell Fill Color Set cell file color.
bold.png Bold Turn bold on or off.
italic.png Italic Turn italic on or off.
undy.png Underline Turn underline on or off.
labeloptions.png Label Options Set a cell to show a field label, a field value or both field label and value.

Tips and Tricks

  • If showing both field label and value in a single cell (for example, 'Name: Albert'), set horizontal alignment to 'Justify'.
  • Best visual practice is keep the number of different fonts (e.g. Arial, Times, etc.) and font sizes used in a single chart to a minimum.
  • The last row of the color picker allows you to set custom colors.

Text Alignment Group

Changes apply to any selected boxes and/or selected box cells only.

verticalalignment.png Vertical Alignment Align the text to the top, middle or bottom of a cell.
horizontalalignment.png Horizontal Alignment Align text to the left, center or right of a cell. 'Justify' aligns the field label on the left and the field value on the right.
wraptext.png Wrap Text Wrap text to multiple lines if the text doesn't fit horizontally within a cell.

Tips and Tricks

  • You may want to change the width of a cell if text wraps to too many lines.
  • Use shift-click to select multiple cells (or boxes). Once selected, you can change text alignment for the entire selection.
  • By default, text wrap uses spaces, dashes (e.g. Programmer-Analyst) and forward slashes (e.g. Programmer/Analyst) when breaking text into multiple lines.
  • You can define additional break characters (used for text wrapping) in the field manager panel.

Line Properties Group

Changes apply to any selected lines.

inethickness.png Line Thickness Set line thickness and dash style.

Tips and Tricks

  • You can hide connecting lines by setting the line color to 'No Fill'.
  • Use the 'Fast Select' tool (Editing Tab) to select all connecting lines.
  • The last row of the color picker allows you to set custom colors.

Chart Properties Group

The Chart Properties Group contains tools that allow you to control the presentation and placement of charts on a page.

branchstyles.png Branch Styles Change the branch style for one or more boxes.
boxspacing.png Box Spacing Change the spacing between boxes.
optimizepage.png Optimize Page Automatically optimize the branch styles of all boxes on the current page.
centercharth.png Center Chart Horizontally Center the chart horizontally on the page.
centerchartv.png Center Chart Vertically Center the chart vertically on the page.
aligncharttop.png Align Chart Top Position the chart below the top margin (or header if defined).

Tips and Tricks

  • To change the branch style of a box. Select the box (not the box's manager). The box style of all peers will also be automatically changed.
  • If a Center or Align Chart option is selected, the chart will automatically reposition itself as new boxes are added.
  • Use the 'Move Object' tool (in the Tools group) to manually reposition a chart.

Editing Group

The editing group contains various tools that accelerate editing charts.

find.png Find Show/Hide the find panel.
replace.png Replace Show/Hide the replace panel.
delete.png Delete Delete selected boxes.
fastselect.png Fast Select Select all objects that share a common property.
arrange.png Arrange Align and arrange charts, images and text boxes on the page.
pinobject.png Pin Object Pin objects on the page. Pinned objects are automatically repositioned when the page is resized.

Extras Group

The tools in the Extras Group allow you to add text labels, autotext elements, pictures, tables and legends to your charts. Typically the extra group options are only used when working on the Master Page.

addautotextelement.png Add AutoText Element Click to add an autotext element such as a page # or subchart name.
addimagetool.png Add Image Tool Click to add an image (such as a corporate logo).

addlegendtool.png Add Legend Tool Click to add a Legend.

Tips and Tricks

  • Double click or right-click on an image to manually set scaling.
  • Right-click on an image to access image properties.

Clipboard Group

OrgChart allows you to cut, copy and paste chart boxes.

ut.png Cut Copy current selection to the clipboard and then remove from the document.
opy.png Copy Copy current selection to the clipboard.
aste.png Paste Paste contents of the clipboard into the current document.
opyformat.png Copy Format Copy the format of the selected box to the clipboard.

Tips and Tricks

  • Copy Format is a big time saver. To use Copy Format, select a box and then click on the 'Copy Format' button. The box format is copied to the clipboard. Select any other boxes and then use the 'Paste' button to apply the copied format to those boxes.
  • Hold down the shift key when selecting a box to add it to the current selection.
  • To move or duplicate a box (or branch), you can cut or copy boxes and then paste them under another box. You must select a single box before you can paste a box (or branch) under that box.
  • OrgChart allows you to cut and paste text from a box cell and then paste it into another box cell.
  • OrgChart supports Windows Keyboard Shortcuts. You can find a list of commonly used shortcuts here.
