Overview

The field type determines how a field is displayed and processed.

For example, a field with the value 'http://orgchartguide.wdfiles.com/local--files/workwphotos/jsmith.jpg' will be displayed as a Photo if the type is set to Image and as a string if the type is set to Text.

Field Types

Field types can be set as Text, Number, Image and Date.

Text Fields

Text is the default type for any field.

Setting the field type to Text allows you to:

  • Set which characters are used for text wrapping (Break Chars). For example, you can break on the '@' sign for email addresses.

Number Fields

Setting the field type to Number allows you to:

  • Control how a field is processed when used in formulas
  • Control how the field is displayed
  • Set the number of decimal places shown (0.00 vs 0.0)
  • Set Prefix character to be shown before a number (for example, a '$')
  • Set Postfix character to be shown before a number (for example, a 'USD')
  • Set a number to be shown as a percentage (for example, 0.2 is shown as 20%)
  • Enable 1000 separator (1000 shown as 1,000)

Setting the field type to Image allows you to:

Date Fields

Setting the field type to Date allows you to:

  • Set the display format for a date (for example, January 28, 2017 vs. 01.28.2017)
  • Perform date calculations (e.g. Convert a birth date to age)

Setting a Field Type

To set a field type:

  1. Open a chart
  2. Select the DOCUMENT RIBBON
  3. Click on the fieldmanager.png Field Mgr button
  4. Click on a field (for example, Birth Date)
  5. Set the Field Type to Date (using the Field Type popup menu at the bottom of the screen)
  6. Click OK (green button at the top)
